What is Sub-surface Drip?
Correctly managed sub-surface drip irrigation, under turf, will supply the following benefits: · Reduced water consumption could be as high as 50%, but this is dependent upon what irrigation practices would have been exercised with pop-up sprinklers. There is no evaporation, wind-deflection or run-off; · No vandalism or system damage because there are no obvious surface parts; · Hazard free for grounds-user safety; · Ideal for treated effluent/wastewater (“B” and “C” Class effluent)and is totally accepted by the EPA/Health Commission; · Irrigation scheduling can occur when grounds are being used. Water distribution, in sub-surface drip, is based on the ability of the soil to move the moisture by capillary action. The same quantity of water emitted below the surface in comparison to on the surface will result in a greater wetted area—obviously due to the problem of evaporation of surface moisture. Whilst surface drippers will wet an area immediately around a plant it should not be assumed that the moisture necessarily reaches the root system. Sub-surface drip, however, is placing the moisture at the root zone, hence a deeper, broader root growth is developed. When comparing water distribution of a sub-surface drip system with a traditional pop-up sprinkler system, the difference is profound. A good quality, well designed and installed sprinkler system, watering during perfect conditions (e.g. without any wind), could provide a 70% DU (distribution uniformity). Sub-surface drip, on the other hand, is not affected by wind, or any other negative factors, and will deliver the entire irrigation allocation to the plants—i.e. 99% |
